Preston Middle School in Fort Collins went on lock down on Wednesday morning after authorities investigated information about a potential threat.

Fort Collins Police has since determined that the threat was a hoax, according to a press release issued on Friday.

A female student has been cited for the fabrications, and faces false reporting and interference with an educational institution charges — both misdemeanors. Because the female student is a juvenile, her name won't be released to the public.

Fort Collins Police said they received two reports of the threat through the Safe2Tell tip line.

“School violence is not a joke, and we take all threats seriously,” said school resource officer supervisor Sgt. Laura Lunsford in the press release.

“We encourage parents to talk to their kids about the importance of using Safe2Tell as a tool for safety, not as a prank.”
