Be sure to check the cash in your wallet because Loveland has fake bills currently circulating! I can’t tell you the last time I had a $100 bill in my wallet—probably because I work in radio. If you’re rolling large, beware, because according to Loveland police, this has happened more than once, which means this is a problem.

But what if you have no idea how to check to see if your money is, in fact, the real deal? Because we’ve all seen the cashier at the grocery store take a bill and hold it up high to the light to examine it, but what are they looking for?

Real or Fake how do you know?

  • What does the paper feel like? If your bill doesn’t have that waxy feeling, you may have some fake money.
  • Missing security strip (this is why cashiers hold bills up to the light).
  • No color-shifting ink. Real money doesn’t smudge.
  • If the money in your wallet feels light and smooth like regular paper, that’s not a good sign.
  • Some of these counterfeit bills actually say “Motion Picture Purposes.” I know that sounds ridiculous, but really, who looks that closely when it comes to money?

So what happens if you have what you believe to be fake cash?

You may wonder who suffers the most from this counterfeit scam. Think about small businesses just trying to survive in this crazy economy. Think about everyday people who live on a strict budget.

$100 is a lot of money, money most people can’t afford to lose. Again, I would cry.
