New Wolf Pack Forms in Colorado’s High Country

A new wolf pack has been formed in Colorado. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has confirmed the formation of the Piney Ridge Pack with successful reproduction. The average litter size for wolves is four to six pups.

New Piney Ridge Wolf Pack Confirmed in Colorado

The addition of the Piney Ridge Pack raises the number of wolf packs in the state of Colorado to five. The Piney Ridge Wolf Pack is located in Eagle County, Colorado.

Detection of pups in late spring or early summer is inherently challenging, because of their use of remote habitats in dense cover, secretive nature of very young animals, and time potentially underground.

Said Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Wolf Conservation Program Manager, Eric Odell, in the press release.

Officials have not released any further information on the newly formed Piney Ridge Pack. Currently, it is unknown how many pups were born or how many wolves make up the new pack.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has confirmed that between the dates of April 1, 2025, and March 30, 2026, 10 wolves died in the state. Seven of the wolves were dispersers, and only three wolves were part of a pack.

Colorado Gray Wolf Information Is Released Annually

Information on Colorado's gray wolf packs is released annually. The 2025-2026 Colorado Gray Wolf Annual Report is available now. The 2026-2027 annual report, which will include information on the newly formed Piney Ridge Wolf Pack, will be released in Spring 2027.
