Scams are happening everywhere at all times. In today's society and economy, it seems like everyone is looking for the fastest and easiest way to make money. Most do it the honest way by working a job, but others decide to try to scam others out of their hard-earned money. There are a variety of scams to keep an eye out for. There are internet scams, phone scams, door-to-door scams, and in-person scams. A new phone scam is making the rounds that could make you the next target if you aren't aware of it.

Many people refuse to answer their phones these days unless it is a number they recognize or at least an area code where they live. One major reason for this is all the phone scams that are taking place constantly. Anytime a phone rings, it seems like someone on the other end wants your money. Some scams are obvious and easy to catch, and others are better executed and tougher to catch. One new scam that is happening is a number that will call pretending to be Venmo and tell you that your account has been hacked. They will leave a voicemail and make it seem urgent, but it won't stop there. That would be easy to ignore, but they will continue to call over and over again, making it seem even more urgent. Your option is to either answer or block the number.

If you are someone who doesn't use Venmo at all or very often, it will be easy to not fall for this scam, but if you are someone who uses it frequently, it may be more difficult to ignore the calls. The good news is that the number is labeled as 'spam risk' when it calls, but that isn't the only way to know that this is a scam. The area code calling is 417, which, if you look it up, is a Missouri area code. The problem is that Venmo is based in New York and has an 855 area code. A little research and it's easy to find out that this is a scam that you don't want to fall for.

If you get a phone call from a number pretending to be Venmo, make sure to do your homework before giving any information. If they continue to call or leave multiple voicemails, block the number because odds are high that you are being scammed.
