Retirement is something many of us dream and fantasize about. Some are lucky to be enjoying it now, and others will sadly never get to experience it. Some will be lucky enough to retire early and enjoy their older years, while others will continue to work until they die and never get time to relax and enjoy retirement. It isn't easy to retire, as you have to work hard, save, and plan for it, or else you can't pay your bills and live comfortably. When it comes to retirement in Colorado, how much do you need to save up to afford health care and have your bills covered?

During retirement, you are older and may have some medical issues pop up that you didn't have in your younger days. Medical bills can pile up, and if you don't have good insurance or a good amount saved up, it could ruin your retirement or put you into significant debt. According to a recent study by Fidelity.com, the average 65 year old that will retire in 2026 will spend $185,500 on medical care and expenses. This is up by 7.5% from last year. If you are thinking ahead about retirement, it is a good idea to start putting money away now for your future medical bills as this number will likely increase as the years tick by. While the medical bills may scare some from retiring too soon, many are positive about retirement in America and in Colorado.

With the cost of retirement going up and not everyone being able to afford it, are fewer and fewer people retiring? Shockingly, the study shows that 72% say they will retire on their own terms, and nearly 75% say they have a plan to reach their retirement goals. The good news is that 81% surveyed know retirement health care will be high and are planning for it, but 26% say saving up for the health care costs is their biggest challenge when it comes to preparing for retirement.
