Memorial Day is fast approaching, and many think of going to the lake, grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, or enjoying a day away from work. While all of these are nice, it is also important to remember the holiday's true meaning. It is the day we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. While we will spend the weekend honoring these fallen veterans, many are still in the area as well, who are active, and those who are retired. When it comes to retired veterans, which state is the best to live in, which is the worst, and how does Colorado compare in caring for retired veterans?

Retired veterans deserve the best. These men and women put their lives on the line for our freedom and deserve to be taken care of, but certain states don't know how to properly take care of their veterans, and others know how to do it right. WalletHub recently released a list ranking the best states to the worst states for retired veterans, and ranked them using criteria such as economic environment, quality of life, and health care. Using these criteria, it was determined that South Carolina is the best state for retired veterans, with North Dakota being second, and Wyoming rounding out the top three. The worst state for retired veterans is Oregon, with Vermont being the second worst, and even though technically not a state, Washington, D.C., rounds out the bottom three, which is extremely shocking to see the nation's capital so low.

If you are a retired veteran in Colorado and feel that you don't get enough, perhaps it is time to move to another state, as Colorado is ranked the ninth worst state for retired veterans. Colorado is 44th in economic environment, 22nd in quality of life, and 35th in health care. Shockingly, Colorado ranks so low when you consider how many active veterans live here, including the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
