Dreaming of the Olympics in Colorado? Here’s What It Would Take
The Olympic Games are kicking off very soon and many of us in Colorado will be glued to our smart devices, rooting for our country.
Since the beginning of the games, Coloradans have taken home ten gold medals and 15 Colorado natives will be competing in Paris.
Wouldn't it be great to have the Olympics right here in Denver? In theory, it sounds great, but not every city is meant to host the biggest event in sports.
Has Colorado Ever Hosted the Olympics?
Back in 1970, Denver was awarded to host the Olympics. Denver was going to host the Winter Olympic Games in 1976, but it never happened because voters declined to fund the games.
Will the Olympics ever be hosted in Colorado? Let's take a look at what would need to happen to make this idea a reality.
Infrastructure to Be Built in Colorado
If the Olympics were coming to Colorado we would need to do more than open the doors for Empower Field at Mile High and Ball Arena.
Denver would need to add better public transportation, ensure housing for all athletes, employees, and spectators, and ensure that roads were prepared.

A lot of construction would need to happen in order for the Games to be comfortable for everybody.
It All Would Come Down to One Thing
At the end of the day, the only way to make this possible would be money. Hosting an Olympic event comes with a significant monetary cost. The Paris Olympics are about to kick off, and it costs roughly $9.7 billion to host.
When Rio hosted the Games in 2016, they spent over $23 million.
Hosting the Olympic Games is a major financial investment and if a city like Denver ever wanted to consider hosting the games they would have to adopt a very organized plan that provides financial stability.
