What is Obsidian?

Obsidian is the result of rapidly cooling viscous lava according to Britannica. Silica makes up about 65 to 80 percent of the composition of a chunk of Obsidian. Classified as igneous rock, Obsidian has been known throughout history as a material to make weapons such as spearheads, arrowheads, and other sharp objects.

Where can you find Obsidian in Colorado?

A location in Colorado has been named one of the best places in the United States to find Obsidian. This location is the only known location where the rock can be found in the state too. Cochetopa Dome, Colorado is located approximately 20 miles south of Gunnison, Colorado and Rock Seeker has classified this location as the sixth best in the United States.

According to Rock Seeker, much of the area of Cochetopa Dome is not accessible to the public as the majority of the area is private land. However, fishermen at the lakes and nearby creeks state that small nuggets of Obsidian can be found on the shores if collectors are willing to look for them.
