Colorado’s Connection to the Summer Blockbuster Movie ‘Twisters’
I remember when the movie Twister came out when I was a kid. I loved that movie; the action made me want to become a stormchaser. Nearly three decades later, we finally got a sequel. Technology advances over the past decade have not only advanced movies but also how we look at and study weather.
Twisters recently debuted at movie theaters across the nation, while I have not seen the movie yet, I hear it is action-packed with wild weather. There also happens to be a Colorado connection in the movie.
Twisters Movie Features a Colorado Drone
CU Boulder's RAAVEN drone was created by the Integrated Remote and In-Situ Sensing program. The drone is unlike any other drone you might have seen before. RAAVEN has a six-and-a-half-foot wingspan and can race through the sky at speeds up to 90 miles per hour with flight times lasting up to three hours.
Brian Agrow, professor and lead developer of CU Boulder's RAAVEN was contacted by film crews in April 2023. The film crew was seeking permission to recreate a remote-controlled version of RAAVEN for a movie.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, you can still see a glimpse of the RAAVEN drone in Twisters in the trailer below.
