Colorado has seen a decrease in deaths on the roads in 2024. While there may have been a downward trend last year, parts of Northern Colorado had increases in fatalities involving motor vehicles.

In 2024, there were 684 people killed on the roads of Colorado. This is the second year in a row that Colorado has seen a decrease in traffic-related deaths coming off of a record-high rate in 2022 at 764.

2024 Traffic Deaths in Colorado

Denver and Aurora had a double-digit decrease in deaths in 2024. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the city of Thornton saw a triple-digit increase in traffic deaths with 18 fatalities. Adams County Colorado had the most traffic fatalities in the state with 84 deaths according to KDVR.

Weld and Larimer counties made the list of deadliest Colorado counties in 2024. Larimer County had a 19 percent decrease year over year with 35 traffic-related deaths and Weld County ranked the third deadliest county in Colorado with an increase of 20 percent over 2023 due to 67 deaths on the roads.

Larimer County may have had a decrease in overall deaths in 2024, however, Fort Collins saw an eight percent increase in traffic-related deaths with 14 fatalities. Greeley had a double-digit increase in 14 deaths and up 27 percent from the previous year.

The Most Common Traffic-Related Deaths in Colorado

The number one cause of death on the roads of Colorado in 2024 occurred in passenger vehicles with 371 lives lost, followed by 162 motorcycle deaths.
