As someone who had their drink spiked with roofies in Old Town, I am hopeful that a new invention could help limit that possibility.

Did you know that 56% of women report they’ve unknowingly had their drink spiked?

The 'Drink Spiking Prevention Scrunchie' called "NightCap" could make a huge difference in the Fort Collins, and all other, nightlife scenes by potentially preventing perpetrators from spiking a drink using the portable scrunchie drink cover.

You wear the scrunchie part on your wrist. Once you get a drink you put the elastic plastic covering over the top of your drink, and the scrunchie part goes on the glass to hold everything in place. There is a hole for a straw making it extremely difficult to spike a drink.

NightCap covers are all washing machine friendly so you can use them over and over again.

For those that don't know, getting roofied in Old Town has been a common story, but not something that is commonly talked about. In fact, it happened to me.

One August night, I went out with a guy on a Tinder date in Old Town. We went to two bars and I remember he was a little too touchy and thought to myself that I should pay close attention to my drink.

I thought I was being careful, but unfortunately I wasn't being careful enough. I remember the first part of the night then it goes black. Nothing.

The morning I woke up after I was roofied I ran out of the unknown house, tried to figure out where in the world I was, then tried to find my vehicle. I scrambled through my phone trying to put the pieces together of what happened.

I then headed back to Old Town, but when I couldn't find it after an hour of aimlessly walking around desperately looking I stopped by the Fort Collins Traffic Department.

By this point the shock had worn off, now the panic started to set in... "Did he steal my car like he stole my sense of safety?" and "Why don't I remember anything?"

The women working there were extremely helpful in what felt like a sincerely hopeless and terrifying experience.

When I was talking with the women at the traffic department they informed me that not only did they know 2 other women who had been roofied and taken advantage of, but one of the lady's daughter had experienced more or less of what I had.

The police searched for my vehicle, a friend picked me up and then I went to the hospital. The nurses were helpful and kind, the police officers were understanding and there was an advocate who helped me the whole process.

But it was still all very overwhelming, shocking and scary.

This is something NO ONE should ever have to experience. If you have, know that you are NOT alone and it is NOT your fault.

While NightCap can decrease your chances of having a drink spiked, it isn't perfect.

NightCap can deter drink spiking in many instances but cannot guarantee your safety. Always buy your own drink and never leave it unattended. Drink spiking statistics sourced from alcohol.org.

The prices vary from $4.99 to $71.99 for a gift pack. Due to high demand there is about a 6-8 weeks delivery wait time.

You can only control what you do, and hopefully this new invention prevents possible perpetrators from hurting anyone else.

If you or someone you know has been in a situation like that contact the police and go to the hospital. Time is everything in situations like this as urine samples need to be collected within 72 hours to detect the drug.

Rohypnol, commonly known as "roofies", is "used in the short-term treatment of insomnia, as a pre-medication in surgical procedures and for inducing anesthesia."

Partial amnesia is an expected pharmacologic effect of this type of drug.

However, this effect is particularly dangerous when Rohypnol is used illicitly to aid in sexual assault. Victims may not be able to clearly recall the assault, the assailant, or the events surrounding the assault.
