Welp. Xcel is now letting the public know that there could be more power outages in the western and southern parts of Colorado this week. As we Coloradoans are well aware, we are in the middle of a wicked drought, and wildfires are a real concern. Currently, firefighters are battling a fire up north near Wellington, and officials are concerned about low water levels in reservoirs.

What does this mean for you and me? Well, get ready for me to complain about the most first-world problem of them all: the internet. I’ll be the first to say if the grid ever goes down, I’ll die. Not trying to be dramatic, but I’ll die. Watching Little House on the Prairie gives me anxiety. Think about it, everything is tied to the power grid.

Xcel has assured customers that alerts will be sent out if they decide to move forward with the outages on Wednesday and Thursday, but it seems to be about 90% probable, so get ready.

Here are some ways you can prepare for a power outage

  • Make sure you have batteries and flashlights ready to go.
  • Buy ice for your refrigerated and freezer items.
  • Make sure all of your electronics are fully charged in case of an emergency, like when your kid is freaking out and the only way to stop a meltdown is by giving them an iPad with movies downloaded. Please don’t judge me. I’m tired.
  • Buy food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, like granola bars, peanut butter, and canned goods.
  • Make sure you have plenty of bottled water on hand!

Again, this power outage situation is still in the maybe category, but it's always good to be prepared. We'll keep you updated as updates come in!
