This summer in Northern Colorado has been a scorcher. This past weekend, Denver International Airport broke a record for the hottest day on July 26, 2026, beating out the previous record in that location from 1910, with a high of 103.

With 103-degree days, many of us are longing for cooler weather, and some may even be begging for snow to be falling from the sky. You may feel like summer will never end in Colorado, but we're not far off from our first average snowfall in Northern Colorado.

When Northern Colorado Usually Sees Its First Snow

Winter in Northern Colorado this past season was more or less nonexistent. The lack of snow was nice, for one reason, and one reason only. I didn't have to shovel my driveway. However, many industries suffered from the lack of snow. The ski industry and agriculture are just two big ones that come to mind.

This winter, I am hoping we get a decent amount of snow, because lord knows, we need it. Bad. According to the Colorado State University Colorado Climate Center, the average first snowfall of the season isn't too far away.

The first average snowfall usually happens on the Front Range around the last week of October. Looking at the calendar, that puts us at hopefully getting our first dose of winter around October 25.

With the average first snowfall date around the last week of October, we're looking at less than three months until the snowflakes start flying in the sky. It's kind of hard to imagine it right now with 90-degree temperatures, but winter is right around the corner.

Colorado Could Use a Snowier Winter

As much as I want winter and snow to arrive in Northern Colorado, I am hopeful that we get a great fall this year. Even though the lack of rain has given us our struggles, there is still nothing quite like a crisp, fall Colorado day.
