Fall also means apples are in season and ready to be baked, crisped and whatever else you do with apples this time of the year. According to Home for the Harvest, September is typically the best month to pick apples, so now's the time to plan a weekend trip to a nearby orchard.

While it may be slim pickins when it comes to apple orchards in the Northern Colorado area, there are a couple of farms in the area that offer 'u-pick' hours during the fall produce season.

Below are two farms near Fort Collins where you can pick your own autumn apples, noting that YaYa Farm and Orchard in Longmont has already sold out of u-pick-it slots for the 2021 season.

Adam's Apple Orchard at 42135 Co Rd 43 in Ault has over 150 different apple varieties, and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lukens Farms at 9378 County Road 124 east of Fort Collins reportedly offers apple picking, but it is suggested that you call ahead at (303) 579-2668 for hours and availability.

'While peak harvest generally occurs in September for most of the apples we see in stores, there are some cultivars which are ready as early as late July and others that aren’t ripe until October or even November,' Home for the Harvest said.
