When you first look at the cost of a flight on Spirit airlines, you may start thinking about buying a vacation home and visiting it every weekend. At only $28.79 one way, you could fly across country for the price of a tank of gas. But, the airline that will start offering flights out of Denver on May 3rd may also be the king of hidden fees.

Spirit Airline has actually had a place at Denver International Airport (DIA) before. They left Denver eight years ago, but because both the airport and the airline have grown they have both agreed to reunite. Non-stop flights will be offered from Denver to Chicago O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale and Las Vegas.

Spirit has been criticized for its unusual fees, including fees for carry-on bags, online booking and drinks. The airline also charges a $5 fee for an airline agent to print a boarding pass.”Spirit has an aura of low prices without people necessarily knowing the details and adding up all the charges one by one by one,” said James Simmons, an aviation management professor at Metro State University of Denver. Customers offer mixed reviews of Spirit’s fees, with some saying they appreciate the ability to control their costs by not taking bags, and others expressing frustration at the costs.
