Junky Yard Earns Jail Time for South Carolina Woman

Wow! I’ve heard of people getting citations from the police, but this is the first time I’ve heard of somebody going to jail over a messy yard! The problem began in 2008 when the economy hit South Carolina photographer Linda Ruggles’ business hard. Her roof project came to a halt, stacks of shingles sat on her roof for years and her yard began to fill-up with junk metal she collected for spare cash. The town finally fined her in December 2010, but she refused to pay the fine, so they jailed her in January 2012!
Ruggles said she had no money to pay the ticket and was pouring every last cent she earned into saving her home from foreclosure and satisfying her back taxes. She maintains that the town law is unfair and that her arrest accomplished nothing.
“It didn’t change the situation,” she said. “I just don’t think being handcuffed, photographed and fingerprinted is really a behavior-modification tool to keep me from being poor.”
