Today is MLK Day! It’s a  United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King’s birthday, January 15.
The Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley communities will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day today (Monday, January 16th) with a number of events.

FORT COLLINS

The theme of the Fort Collins/Loveland/CSU celebration is “Fulfill the Dream: A Day On Not A Day Off.” The route for the traditional one-mile community march, which starts at 11 a.m., will begin in Old Town Square, Fort Collins, and continue down College Avenue to Laurel Street. The march will proceed through the center of the Oval on Colorado State’s campus, then continue west on Isotope Drive to end at CSU’s Lory Student Center. Participants will be encouraged to sing as they march. Fale (Fort Collins African Drum & Dance Troupe) will lead the march and make appearances throughout the celebration in the Lory Student Center.

Traffic will be restricted during the march. Those restrictions will include delays along portions of College Avenue and Mountain, Oak, Olive, Magnolia, Mulberry, Myrtle, Laurel, Mason and Howes streets. Parking in city garages – located at Remington and Mountain and at Mason and Laporte – will be free on Jan. 16. Two-hour parking restrictions in Old Town will not apply.

Immediately following the march, a celebration will commence in the Lory Student Center Main Ballroom at 11:45 a.m. During the celebration, this year’s poetry and essay winners from the Poudre School District will read their winning works.

Following the celebration, the Volunteer Fair will be held in the Lory Student Center Food Court. Several local agencies will be on hand to offer the opportunity to learn how to get involved in the community and bring King’s dream to reality.

LOVELAND

Loveland’s 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at Thompson Valley High School, 1669 Eagle Drive.

GREELEY

Greeley’s 17th annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. will include the traditional march from the Greeley Chamber of Commerce to the Union Colony Civic Center and a keynote speaker “Toure”. The celebration begins at 10:30 a.m. today with the march from the Chamber of Commerce, 902 7th Ave., to the Union Colony Civic Center, 701 10th Ave. At 11 a.m. at the UCCC. writer,

TV commentator and cultural critic “Toure” will be the keynote speaker. Toure’s presentation is “How Racism Functions Today and Ways to Deal with It to Get Success”.

Attendees of the MLK celebration are asked to bring at least one non-perishable food donation to benefit the Weld Food Bank.
