The year was 1994, and the hearts of residents all over Colorado were captured by the birth of twin polar bears at the Denver Zoo. Klondike & Snow were rock stars. People lined up for hours to get a glimpse, others wore t-shirts with their pictures, and one thing was for sure, you always heard about them on the news at night. It’s hard to believe it’s been 17 years since two polar bears captured our hearts. Now the world has lost one. Snow passed away Monday at a zoo in Arizona.
I always used to dread that one aunt who would always get me a calender for Christmas. The problem was it was always pictures of giraffes or trees, and quite frankly I didn’t want to look at those things everyday for a whole year. So this year I am going to send her my Christmas list early to make sure the calender I unwrap in December is the new Denver Bronco Cheerleader Calender. If you dont want to wait till Christmas you dont have to, the calender is avaliable now.
It was such a simple idea to send a guy, named Guy, all around the country to visit some of the most iconic “mom and pop” sort of restaurants. The show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives (DDD) is one of those shows that once you finally force yourself to watch it once, you will be hooked for life. Since we think the show is so cool, and we have plenty of our own Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives around Northern Colorado we have decided to start our own series of videos highlighting the best of the best. But before we can start, we need to know where we should go!
Weather forecasters say that it could be the worst hurricane to hit the United States since Katrina almost 7 years to the date. Hurricane Isaac has already caused the Republican National Convention to be delayed and Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana have all declared states of emergency with Isaac looming. Our thoughts and prayers are with those to the south, but Isaac could also affect us.
Growing up in Greeley you always felt that there was something mystical about the old farm house on the corner of 39th Avenue and 10th Street. Few farm houses still stood in the city and you always wondered about the old man inside. Eventually the farm was opened to the public and I actually had the opportunity to meet Mr. Plumb at age 100. Now the Plumb Farm is a learning center, and they would like you to come to the annual Pets ‘n’ Popsicles event starting Thursday.
The last time the Denver Nuggets were involved in a blockbuster trade it involved getting rid of one of the best players in the NBA because he no longer had interest in being in Denver. This time there is a superstar in Orlando that wants out. Sorry Nuggets fans, Dwight Howard is not coming to Denver, but the Nuggets are involved in the trade that is about to send “Superman” to the Los Angeles Lakers and a solid player to the Mile High City.
To be honest with you I am a bit of a showman. I like bright colored clothes, and making bold statements. New Colorado State head football coach, Jim McElwain, seems to like bold statements as well, just in a less colorful way. CSU showed off the first uniforms they will wear while playing for McElwain on media day, picture day, as he called it, yesterday. To say the least they are plain.
Some of my fondest childhood memories come from right in front of my house. We didn’t necessarily live in the nicest part of town, but we were extremely blessed with the neighbors that chose the same neighborhood as us. It was a nightly thing to get out, kids and adults alike, to play street hockey, but one Tuesday night a year we did it big. National Night Out was always a highlight of my summer. Tonight several neighborhood block parties are scheduled to celebrate the 29th annual event.
It may be the most anticipated season in Denver Broncos history. The team is already seeing record numbers of fans at training camp, and you can't turn on a national sports TV show without hearing something about the team. Today fans will be able to see the team in some real action when they take to Sports Authority Field at Mile High to scrimmage each other.
There truly is nothing better than fresh from the farm fruits and vegetables. For twenty years now that is what the Greeley Farmers’ Market has been all about. This Saturday (August 3rd) the folks at the Greeley Farmers’ Market are celebrating those twenty years with a party!
