As much as possible I try to avoid fast food, but there is just something about a good cheeseburger that causes a lack of control for me. When I think of a good cheeseburger there really are only a handful of places that come to mind. Unfortunately one of the places I frequent for their burgers wont be serving anything for awhile. Culver’s Restaurant in Greeley will be closed for at least one day.
The 2012 Larimer County Fair & Rodeo kicks off today (August 3rd) at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland and runs through Tuesday. This years fair truly has something for everyone from classic fair events like the livestock show, rodeo, and carnival, to less traditional fair events such as the Gnarly Barley Brew Festival, a magic show, and the Sweetheart Balloon Rally.
I know it is cliche, and people from almost everywhere say it, but I truly couldn’t be more proud to say I am from Colorado. I have yet to meet someone in my 25 years of being here that has said they hate the place, and not too many that make it here ever leave. Sure the state has faced its fair share of turmoil of late, but they way we have come together makes me even more proud to be a Coloradoan. Today we celebrate Colorado Day.
As you may know, I have done a little bowling in my day… Ok a lot of bowling. I still get to the lanes here and there, but more than worrying about how my game is (by the way it’s not very good anymore) I think it is important to get our youth involved in the sport I grew up loving. That is why I am proud to support my buddy Jeremy and the crew at Highland Park Lanes as they put on their annual Race to 300 Car Show with all the proceeds going to the Junior Bowlers Scholarship program.
You may remember a few weeks back there was a real pretty girl gracing the cover of our website. Courtney James had stopped by the radio studios to talk about the modeling contest she was in call “Hometown Hotties” from Maxim magazine. I promised when we showcased her awhile back that I would let you know when you could start voting for her to win the contest. That time is now!
You can’t escape it, even if you don’t watch the news or read the newspaper, you are constantly reminded of the bad and the sad in the world. Many times we let it roll over as if nothing happened, but behind everything we see or hear in the news is a story, a life, and people who are hurting. This morning I awoke to find out an old friend from high school had passed in an accident. Sometimes it takes something like that to remind you how precious life really is.
After Jim McElwain was hired by Colorado State University to become their new head football coach at the end of last season the general consensus around Northern Colorado was that CSU would instantly become a contender in the Mountain West Conference. College Football writers don’t see that happening this year. The Rams were ranked 8th out of 10 teams in the conference in the preseason media poll.
It used to be that the county fair was the highlight of the summer for small town folks. You have heard the stories and may even be able to tell one or two about the fair food, the midway, and the summer love. Times have changed, and the fair is a little different now a days, but one thing stills rings true… Free family fun!
We knew they were coming, we were just waiting to see how bad they would be. Today the NCAA revealed the punishments it has put on Penn State University following a child sex abuse scandal in which university officials including former head coach Joe Paterno hid to protect themselves from bad publicity. NCAA president Mark Emmert and Ed Ray, the chairman of the NCAA’s executive committee announced the sanctions at a news conference this morning.
As a person who feels it is important to put everything you have into the things you do, I knew when I started Lures 4 Laney that there would be blood, sweat, and tears put into the event. The one thing that was out of my control was whether or not people would support the event. That was answered with a big ‘ol YES yesterday as over 250 people came out and helped us raise in the neighborhood of $9,000.
Some will claim it is out of the goodness of his heart, others will say he is here to earn votes in a pivotal swing state, and some believe it is part of his duty. No matter how you feel about it, President Barack Obama will be in Colorado Springs for about three hours today to view damage caused by the Waldo Fire and thanks first responders.
During a time of tragedy we all look for ways to help, and there are so many ways you can pitch in to help those affected by the wildfires in area. There is a new way to help the firefighters who have been injured or lost their own homes during the 2012 wildfire season, and also get a cool keepsake for yourself.
