If you plan on cutting down your own Christmas tree this year, you can't do it in Larimer County.

According to a notice from the U.S. Forest Service, the Canyon Lakes Ranger District has cancelled the annual Christmas tree sale in Roosevelt National Forest due to complications from the Cameron Peak Fire.

Tree-cutting events are also cancelled in order to encourage social distancing.

However, you can still cut down a tree in certain sectors of the Sulphur Ranger District, as long as you purchase a permit first. Just make sure to avoid these areas:

  • The Fraser Experimental Forest
  • Indian Peaks, Never Summer, Vasquez Peak and Byers Peak wilderness areas
  • Within 1/4 mile of the highway, the Winter Park ski area, and above to Berthoud Pass
  • The James Peak Protection Area
  • Any developed recreation areas
  • The East Troublesome Fire and Williams Fork closure areas

Otherwise, grab your permit, get the family together, and head to the mountains to get your Christmas tree. Or, snag a Charlie Brown tree from the store. Either way works.
