Wives’ Permission Required for Viagra Use in New Kentucky Bill
A new bill sent to the Kentucky House of Representatives could require men to bring a signed note from their wives before being prescribed Viagra.
The bill would also require men to visit a doctor twice before receiving the erectile dysfunction medication and to swear on a Bible to use the meds only for sexual relations with their wives.
Democratic representative Mary Lou Marzian, the bill's sponsor, says the bill "is about family values."
Marzian adds she doesn't expect the bill to pass, and that it is really meant to mirror the issues she sees in a recently-passed abortion law.
The representative, a Democrat, was only one of 3 who voted against the "informed consent" bill earlier this month, which requires women to receive counseling from a health professional 24 hours prior to having an abortion.
"I am appalled that the Kentucky General Assembly, which very few have any medical degrees, feel that it is important that they insert themselves between a woman and her physician," Marzian told WDRB.
Some critics argue Marzian's bill dismisses another serious issue.
"It really disgusts me. These medications are very important to the prostate cancer survivor and shouldn't be taken lightly," said the leader of a prostate cancer support group to WKYT.
Similar bills have been introduced in South Carolina and Ohio in the past in response to abortion laws.
