One Northern Colorado town could be seeing less of a blood sucking insect this summer. The Town of Windsor announced that they have partnered with Vector Disease Control International to develop a control program to assist in the mitigation of mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes will essentially be under surveillance this summer in Windsor by use of traps. These traps will monitor adult mosquitoes in the area, and field inspections will dictate pest control applications. If one of these traps catches 100 or more mosquitoes, the Town of Windsor will deploy the use of insect and pest control applications that will target mosquito larvae before they hatch.

This method of surveillance and control applications will be used through June to August. The Town of Windsor says that there are 14 surveillance traps strategically placed throughout the Northern Colorado town.'

Windsor Is Fighting the Bite: West Nile Virus

This effort to control the mosquito population is to reduce the chances of humans contracting the West Nile Virus. All 14 mosquito traps in the town of Windsor will be monitored weekly, and treatment in these areas will be determined by the mosquito populations in these areas of these traps.

One of the main species that is being sought out in the mosquito population is the Culex mosquito. This species of mosquito is the one that carries and transmits the West Nile Virus. Humans who contract the virus could have symptoms that include fever, headaches, joint pain, body aches, rashes, and neck stiffness.

How Common Is West Nile Virus in Humans?
