Did you know that Colorado is home to wild horses? I have seen a few while driving on the western slopes of Colorado, and I will say they are a majestic sight to see. There are an estimated 1,300 to 1,500 wild horses in the state, and according to the Bureau of Land Management, that number is too high.

The appropriate management level for wild horses in Colorado is approximately 800 animals. Due to overpopulation, the BLM removes wild horses from the state to maintain environmental health.

This year, one of the ways that the Bureau of Land Management is mitigating the overpopulation of wild horses in Colorado is by placing a small portion of the population up for adoption. If you've always loved the idea of owning a wild horse, this may be the perfect opportunity for you, as an auction will soon happen with nearly two dozen trained wild horses at the end of March.

The Wild Horse Adoption Event will take place at the Mesa County Fairgrounds on March 27-28. On Friday, March 27, viewing of the adoptable wild horses will happen from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a live auction will take place on Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What You Need to Adopt a Wild Horse

These wild horses from Colorado have been trained in haltering, leading, picking up their hooves, and trailer loading. Not just anyone can buy one of these wild horses; potential buyers will have to meet certain qualifications:
