Should You Keep Mowing Your Yard in Colorado This Fall?
The calendar has officially flipped to fall, and the hot days seem to be behind us, yet the weather remains warm. There are moments that feel like fall, with moments of summer lingering. Some pools at apartment complexes remain open, many are still gardening, and there are plenty of activities to do outside on the warm weekends. One question many have at this time of year is: when do you stop gardening and mowing the lawn? Each year is different, and with the hot summer Colorado had, it can be confusing when to stop.
When to Stop Mowing in Colorado

With the rain over the last few weeks, many yards are beginning to look greener. Grass is still growing, but with the inevitable first frost around the corner and the hot summer days gone, how much longer should you get out and mow the lawn? According to countryliving.com, you shouldn't put your lawn mower away yet. They say that it is best to stop mowing when the grass stops growing. This usually happens in mid to late October, meaning there is still time to mow one or two more times before you put the mower away for the year. This may vary depending on which part of Colorado you are in. How do you know when the grass is done growing, though?
Preparing Your Yard For Fall and Winter in Colorado

Once the soil gets to 50 degrees, it enters a type of dormancy and stops growing for the year. This is when you will want to put your mower away. While we have had nights get into the 50s, it hasn't been consistent enough or long enough to make the soil that temperature yet, meaning your grass is still currently growing, depending on where you are located, of course. If your grass is wet or frosty this time of year, do not mow it, as it will do more harm than good and will affect your yard in spring next year. It is likely you have about a month or so left to mow, but now is a good time to think ahead and begin preparing your yard for next year.
