Train Spills 2,000 Gallons Of Diesel In Fort Collins
Firefighters responded to a reported train leaking fuel near S. Lemay Avenue and Riverside Avenue in Fort Collins on Tuesday at approximately 4:43 p.m.
When crews arrived, they found one train leaking a large amount of diesel fuel from one of its 2,600 gallon tanks. Unfortunately, an estimated 2,000 gallons of fuel had already escaped the tank onto the ground.
Firefighters were able to clear the area to provide for fire protection and notified surrounding businesses and other occupancies.
There was no immediate danger to anyone in the area and no evacuations were made.
Great Western and Union Pacific Railroads worked with Poudre Fire Authority's Hazardous Materials Team to ensure containment, working toward the proper steps for appropriate cleanup.
Cause of the leak was determined to be a punctured tank, possibly from debris along the tracks.
