Stephen King's Most Famous Colorado Story

The Stanley Hotel, located in Estes Park, inspired Stephen King's best-selling novel The Shining. The book sold over 700,000 copies and was adapted into a film starring Jack Nicholson in 1980.

In the book and movie, The Stanley Hotel was renamed The Overlook.

As You Can See, It Looks a Lot Different Than the Movie

The film The Shining was not filmed where Stephen King stayed and was inspired by. Reportedly, one of King's biggest issues with Stanley Kubrick, the director of the film adaptation of The Shining, was that he did not use The Stanley Hotel in the movie.

It's kind of strange that he did not want to use the Stanley. Considering his name is, well, Stanley.

Room 217 Is A Must See

When you enter the gift shop, you will see a number over and over again: 217. This is the room that Stephen King stayed in.

Stephen King was staying in room 217 when he had a dream about his three-year-old son screaming in the hallway.

You Can Stay in King's Famous Room

Stephen King stayed in room 217 at the Stanley Hotel in 1974. The Stanley not only has a plaque on the door calling it the Stephen King Suite, but they have decorated the room with a writing desk and new furnishings.
