Is Colorado Part of the Infamous Tornado Alley?

Every year, hundreds of tornadoes touch down in the United States. Spring and early summer are usually when tornadic activity is most tornadoes occur, however, that doesn't mean that a tornado cannot spawn out of storm clouds any time of the year.

States like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and other midwest states are more prone to getting tornadoes than the state of Colorado. With that being said, you might be surprised to know that Weld County is the tornado capital of the United States. The Colorado county has seen more tornadoes touch down than any other county in the United States since 1950.

When it comes to the phrase "Tornado Alley" many do not think of Colorado as being one of those states. However, a portion of Colorado is located on the outskirts of this large swath of land known as Tornado Alley.

The Tornado Alley map nearly covers the entirety of states like Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Kansas. The northern border of Tornado Alley goes all the way into the Northern Plains of South Dakota and reaches into the Texas panhandle and the majority of the northern part of the state.

According to Storm Chasing USA, the eastern portion of Colorado is included in the infamous Tornado Alley, including Weld County. This is certainly no surprise considering the high concentration of tornadic activity that can be witnessed in the spring and summer months here in Northern Colorado.
