The Average Income in Colorado Is Higher Than You Think

The States With the Highest and Lowest Average Incomes

The study looked at the average income for those in the top 5%, the median income, and the average income for those in the bottom 20%. The state with the highest average income is Virginia, with New York being second, and New Jersey rounding out the top three. The state with the lowest income is West Virginia, with New Mexico being the second lowest, and Mississippi rounding out the bottom three. Where does Colorado fall on this list? 

What is the Average Income in Colorado?

With some residents struggling in Colorado and others thriving, how does the average income compare in Colorado to other places? Colorado comes in with the 7th highest average income in the country. Annual average income for those in the top 5% is $498,587. The average median income in the state is $106,187. The average income for those in the bottom 20% is $19,588. Depending on what you make, this study may help you feel better about what you are bringing home, or it may open your eyes to the fact that your income isn't as good as you thought it was. It used to be that a six-figure income would put you above most, but in 2026, you need to be making six figures to be average. For those wondering, the average yearly income in the United States is currently $83,700.
