Memorial Day is fast approaching, and many will hit the road this weekend to enjoy some holiday fun. People will travel through Colorado, to Colorado, and from the state as well. There will be many on the road headed to the mountains, the lake, or some fun destination. Others will take day trips around the state and do things they don't often have time to do on weekends. The weather should be nice after a wet and rainy week. Here are some tips and reminders to keep in mind before hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend and during the summer in Colorado.

Fill Up the Tank Sooner Than Later

With gas prices continuing to go up, it is best to fill up sooner rather than later. Make sure to find the best deal you can and fill up your tank before it goes up again. The closer the holiday gets, the likelier the prices will go up. Every penny counts when travelling, so don't pay more than you have to.

Use Maps or Waves

Even if you know where you are going or going to a place you have been countless times, using Maps and Waves will help you find the quickest route, and keep you updated on road conditions, wrecks, and sometimes police officers waiting to catch you speeding as well. With so many people on the road, these apps could help you avoid some traffic jams.

Load Up on Snacks and Drinks

There are some remote areas in Colorado and the surrounding states, and you never know how far it'll be until the next stop. Make sure you have plenty of snacks, drinks, and entertainment for the little ones, as well as for the adults. Car games can be fun, but sometimes you need more.

Check Ahead on the Road

As with Maps and Waves, make sure to look ahead to prepare for anything that may slow you down. By looking ahead, you know if you should take your time getting lunch if there is a wreck ahead, or perhaps get something on the go to save time for sitting in a traffic jam. It will also let you know if you need to prepare to take an alternate route to help you save some time and get around any stoppages.

Be Alert and a Defensive Driver

With so many people on the road, it is best to put the phone away and make sure to stay alert, keep your eyes open, and be a defensive driver. You never know what the other drivers around you will do, but if you are paying attention, it could be the difference between making it to your destination, a wreck, or death.

Colorado and I-70 are home to some pretty crazy motorists. While Colorado may not be the state with the most reckless drivers or accidents, there are plenty of things people do on the roads that drive us all nuts. Sound off on things you see Colorado drivers doing that would upset anybody.

Colorado's Highway Driving Pet Peeves

Have you ever driven Colorado's Highway 51 while stuck behind some dude riding the left lane? Don't you just love playing "Dodge The Alligators" on Colorado's I-70?

I asked on Facebook, "What is your highway-driving pet peeve in Colorado."
