I remember hearing different states having massive debates over the sale and consumption of raw or unpasteurized milk.

It's been rapidly growing in popularity.

The Health Risks of Drinking Raw Milk

Officials do warn consumers of some possible health concerns of drinking unpasteurized milk. According to the CDC, there is a high risk of foodborne illnesses when unpasteurized milk is consumed.

The New York Times reports that it can specifically cause salmonella, listeria, campylobacter and E. coli.

Outbreaks Are More Common Where Raw Milk Is Legal

This report goes on to say that states where raw milk was legally sold had approximately three times more outbreaks than areas where it's illegal.

But Some Say Raw Milk Has Health Benefits

According to reports, there are some benefits to consuming raw milk. It apparently contains more amino acids, antimicrobials, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids than the pasteurized alternative.

In addition, some even claim that it's better for those with lactose intolerance, asthma, and other allergies.

Can You Legally Buy Raw Milk in Colorado?

So, I was curious about whether or not someone could sell raw milk here in Colorado.

A 2024 Bill Aimed to Change Colorado Raw Milk Laws

In January of 2024, a bill was moving through the state legislature that would have legalized the sale of the controversial product, according to reports.

If this bill went into law, then a raw milk producer who registers with the department of public health and environment could sell directly to customers within the state.

The stipulation is that the producer MUST comply with specific labeling, storage, handling, and transportation requirements.

Colorado Said No—Raw Milk Still Illegal in 2025

This bill did not pass the Colorado legislature.

As of right now (July 2025) the sale of raw cow, goat, or sheep milk specifically for human consumption is illegal, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment.
