A Weld County father was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Monday for involvement in killing his infant son several years ago.

Roberto “Nathan” Archuleta was originally arrested in the case in July 2015. His baby’s mother, Angelica Chavez, dropped her son Donovan off at the defendant’s home, where Archuleta's mother also lived. According to reports used in court, during the next six days, the infant developed chemical burns to his face, mouth and gums, a sepsis infection from pneumonia and red bruises caused by pinching from tweezers. In addition, medical records also showed that Donovan had suffered broken ribs, though not caused by someone administering CPR.

According to Archuleta's mother, she used vinegar and potato slices on her grandson's skin, in an attempt to reduce his fever symptoms, which had started under her care. Rather than fixing the problem, this combination resulted in burns to the boy's body. Although the boy's mother returned to the Archuleta's residence, it took several hours for her to realize something was wrong, before she finally called an ambulance. Sadly, Donovan was pronounced dead at the Children’s Hospital in Denver on August 2, 2017.

Roberto Archuleta is the last to be sentenced in this tragic case, receiving 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections after a jury convicted him of one count of Child Abuse Resulting in Death – Criminal Negligence, a Class 3 Felony.

The boy's mother, Angelica Chavez, was sentenced to eight years in prison back in April of 2017 and the grandmother, Sandy Archuleta, was convicted and sentenced to 24 years in prison in early 2018.
