Greeley firefighters have determined that a van fire that sent a man to the hospital, was an accident. Wayne William was cleaning the air ducts of a home at 4037 15th Street lane in Greeley on Monday morning when he was burned.

The Greeley Fire Department was called to the scene at 9:34 am. When crews arrived, they found the van burning and the burn victim, who was transported to North Colorado Medical Center by Banner Paramedic Services. Fire was threatening an open garage and home. All the fire was extinguished and the fire damage was held to the van with minimal flame damage to the exterior of the garage.

How Did the Fire Start?

According to the Greeley Fire Department:

The van contained the cleaning equipment consisting of a vacuum unit, an air compressor , and a portable generator. After working for approximately 1.5  hours, the employee noticed the generator wasn’t running properly and went out to investigate. At that time he observed a small amount of fuel running out of the generator. He decided to open the fuel tank of the generator and when he did, a large amount of fuel flowed out of the fuel tank and ignited when the gasoline vapors came into contact with the hot exhaust of the running generator. The employee was burned by the flash fire and the interior of the van was ignited.

Total damage is estimated at $15,000 for the van and equipment and then an additional $10,000 to the garage and the homeowner’s pickup truck which was parked nearby and sustained heat damage.
