The Denver Broncos' high-paid star quarterback Russell Wilson will not be starting when the team takes on San Diego on December 31, 2023.

Could the last day of the year, really be the beginning of the end of Wilson's tenure with the team?

That loss against the New England Patriots on Christmas Eve all but ended Denver's chances at actually making it into the playoffs. Does all the blame lie with their $245 million quarterback?

With only two games left in the 2023-2024 Broncos season, word came out on December 27, 2023, that the decision had been made to put Wilson on the bench for the rest of the season.

WHY WOULD DENVER BENCH WILSON NOW?

Many would say they should have benched him earlier and got lucky - lucky in the fact that he didn't get so injured that he wouldn't be able to play next season. Hence, with Denver's playoff chances slim, it's best to not put him out on the field.

WILL RUSSELL WILSON STILL PLAY FOR DENVER NEXT SEASON?

That is a tough call. There aren't many great quarterbacks available, but the 2025 season is coming; with that season, the Broncos are required to pay Wilson $35 million if he's still with the team, even if he can't play due to injury.

WHO IS THE DENVER BACKUP QB, JARRETT STIDHAM?

Stidham (#4) was drafted in 2019 out of Auburn; he played for the Patriots and the Raiders before being signed to Denver in March of 2023. He's played in 14 NFL games, with six TDs and zero fumbles (at least that's something.)
