What Green River Ordinance Signs Mean in Northern Colorado

There is nothing quite as aggravating as someone coming up to the door of your home trying to sell you something. Solar, roofing, pest control, home security, and even cell phone providers.

Let's get real here; it's 2026. Who is buying things from some random person hitting you with a hard pitch at your front door? I have a "No Soliciting" sign on my door for a reason. If I am going to buy something, it isn't going to be from someone who is pushing high-pressure sales tactics on me at the entrance of my home.

You might be surprised to know that there are laws against door-to-door sales in Northern Colorado. Chances are, you have probably seen a sign around your town that says something about a Green River Ordinance.

What is a Green River Ordinance?

The Green River Ordinance is a municipal law that either regulates or flat-out bans the practice of door-to-door sales. The ordinance is named after the town where it originated, Green River, Wyoming, in 1931.

Many towns in Northern Colorado have the Green River Ordinance in effect within their communities. Nearly all of them state that it is illegal for door knockers to come to your door and pitch you if you have a "No Soliciting" or "No Trespassing" sign posted.

However, as you might have experienced, as I have, the salesmen that come to your door often do not care. All they are trying to do is make that appointment however they can.

While I respect the hustle, if you knock on my door and try to sell me something other than Girl Scout Cookies or a local school fundraiser, I certainly will be rude to you. After all, you are coming to my home and hassling me, disrupting my peace.
