Parents Shocked by Possible School Closures in Northern Colorado
Some parents in Northern Colorado learned this week that two schools might unexpectedly close in a school district. According to the Coloradoan, the parents of students at two elementary schools say that they were blindsided by the news of the possible closures before the start of the 2025 school year.
Poudre School District is weighing the options of closing numerous schools in Fort Collins as part of a consolidation. While previous options would call for the closure of five schools in the Poudre School District, two of the schools on the list came as a surprise this week.
Poudre School District Closing Schools in Fort Collins
In the previous four revisions of the possible schools that could be closed in the Poudre School District, Beattie Elementary, Blevins Middle School, Cache La Poudre Elementary, Putnam Elementary, Boltz Middle School, Cache La Poudre Middle School, and Preston Middle Schools were all on the list.
The Poudre School District says that Johnson and Linton Elementary Schools were put on the list for possible closures based on the low enrollment numbers versus the size of the school buildings and their proximity to other elementary schools in the area. Inintally, Linton Elementary was an option for closure in three out of the four revisions and would have been converted to a 100 percent choice-only, dual-language school. The fourth revision put Linton as staying open and absorbing Harris Elementary School.
Needless to say, parents of students in any of these schools are not happy at all about the whole situation. So much in fact, there is going to be a rally outside of the Board of Education's 5:30 p.m. dinner session and at the meeting that will be held outside of the Poudre School District's Administration Building at 2407 Laporte Avenue in Fort Collins on Tuesday night.
