Brian and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary together on K99 this week. We always count Cinco de Mayo as our anniversary date, because it is easy to remember. We have done some crazy things over the past 3 decades, some crazier than others. I have come up with the 5 craziest things I have done in my career:

5. Riding Mechanical Bull at the Stampede

Riding a mechanical bull might not seem very crazy or dangerous, but it is the only time I was ever seriously injured at work. Brian and I had a change to go up against another radio station in a mechanical bull riding competition at the Greeley Stampede.  The funny thing is there is no picture of me on the bull. It's because I didn't stay on the bull long enough for my wife to get a picture. It was one buck, and I was on the mat. I went right over the horns and it left a bruise the size of a grapefruit on my inner thigh. Not one of my prouder moments.

4. Driving a Race Car at Colorado National Speedway

I have had a couple of opportunities to drive a race car at Colorado National Speedway. Both were "celebrity" races, where no real drivers were involved. One time we drove the Baby Grand stock car. The other time we drove the Legend car, like the one in the picture above. Both times I finished 7th out of 8 competitors. Apparently I was only person to use my brakes on the corners. At least I didn't wreck.

3. Swimming With the Fishes

Brian and I had the opportunity or maybe I should say, misfortune of swimming with giant catfish in an aquarium early in our career. There was a sportsman's show at the BW Pickett Arena on the CSU Foothills campus. We jumped into the ice-cold water for just a few seconds. We were promised wet suits for the event, but somehow they were not available when we arrived. I was very unpleasant and a little bit crazy.

2. Cowboy Poker

I don't know who invented Cowboy Poker, but they should be kicked in the business. This could very well be the stupidest thing I have ever done and it is surprising that I didn't get hurt. The idea is to get into a rodeo area and sit at a card table while a poker hand is dealt to each competitor. Then a Mexican fighting bull is released into the arena, who is usually agitated. The last person to leave the table wins. This happened one night at the Sundance during the Wild Bunch Bullriding Series. I was not about to get gored by a bull. As soon as I heard the click of the gate, I was running for the fence. The bull did chase me, but luckily I was able to jump the fence before he could catch me.

1. Bungee Jumping

I jumped from a crane attached to a bungee cord in the parking lot of Jax Mercantile in Fort Collins very early in my career. I can promise you this: I will never do it again. I was young and stupid. It was terrifying. The worst part is not the initial fall, it is when the bungee cord is stretched tight and it flings you back in the air again. They strapped a microphone to my hand and I was live on the air during the jump. I don't know what I said, but I do know it was not suitable for broadcast. I am just glad I didn't soil my britches.  The bungee jump was definitely the craziest thing I have ever done at K99.
