E-Bike and E-Scooter Injuries Are Surging in Colorado
If you live in a neighborhood in Colorado, you are probably aware of the popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters. I can almost guarantee that you have at least one or two that cruise around your home.
Some of these electronic rides can go pretty fast without the help of a kid's legs. Some of these e-bikes can reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour, and I have seen quite a few cruising along the shoulder on highways.

When I was a kid on a bike, all I wanted to do was go as fast as I possibly could. These electronic bikes and scooters can make speed a reality. With speed comes risk, and Colorado doctors are seeing a significant increase in injuries from these electric bikes and scooters.
Colorado Doctors See a Major Jump in Injuries
According to Denver7, emergency room visits at Children's Hospital Colorado have jumped nearly 184 percent from the year prior for e-bike injuries and increased 84 percent for e-scooter incidents.
In 2025, there were 62 injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters that required trauma surgeon intervention. Most of these crashes involved high speeds, loss of control, and lack of helmets. Nearly one-third of the trauma patients were injured in a crash involving a motor vehicle.
Why Standard Bike Helmets May Not Be Enough
Standard bike helmets are geared to protect the head when you are going 12 to 15 miles per hour. E-bikes are going far faster than that, and so investing in an e-bike-specific helmet is going to protect your child much better.
Children's Hospital Colorado Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician and Medical Director of EMS and Critical Care Transport, Dr. Maria Mandt, told Denver7.

Dr. Mandt expects injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters will continue to increase unless more children start wearing helmets and lawmakers start to crack down on high-speed e-bike modifications.
