Colorado Woman Confirmed Dead in Florida Building Collapse

A Colorado woman is one of the 94 victims confirmed dead following a building collapse in Florida on June 24.

According to Denver7, officials identified the body of the Denver-based Cassondra Stratton on Sunday (July 11). The station reports that as of Monday (July 12), 22 people are still unaccounted for.

Cassondra and her husband, Colorado native Michael Stratton, split their time between Denver and Florida, where she was living at the time of the collapse. Stratton told FOX31 that he was on the phone with his wife during the incident.

"She described that the building was shaking and then...the phone went dead," he said to the station. He immediately traveled to Miami — at a time when officials were still telling the public to "have hope." 

"Her husband, Mike, and family again thank everyone who prayed for Cassie over the past two weeks and reiterated their eternal gratitude to the rescue workers whose courage and determination was unmatched," said Cassondra's family in a statement published by Denver7.

According to CNN, the death toll will continue to shift as medical examiners work to identify human remains discovered in the rubble.

"The numbers are fluid and will continue to change," Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told the station at a press conference. "We must rely heavily on the word of the medical examiner's office...to identify human remains. The process is very methodical and it's careful and it does take time."

So far, officials have identified 83 of the incident's 94 confirmed victims, one of whom is Sophia López Moreira, the sister of Paraguay's first lady. Her husband, three children, and the family nanny also perished in the collapse.
