Some might think I am weird, but birds are fascinating. Geese fly in a V shape, eagles soar high above the ground, and much more. Needless to say, birds are special creatures.

I can say one of the most awesome experiences I have had in my life is watching a gigantic flock of birds flying around. We're talking thousands of birds at the same time seemingly synchronized as one single unit.

Just the other day, I saw a much smaller flock flying in formation, almost as if they were small parts of something much bigger. Chances are you might have seen this too. Starlings are small birds that are about eight inches in length with glossy black feathers that have a metallic sheen.

Starling Population in the United States

According to the USDA, the first recorded release of the starling in the United States happened in 1890 at Central Park in New York City. Today, there are approximately 150 million starlings in North America.

Why are starlings so unique? If you have ever seen them fly, you instantly know why. These birds fly in large groups and can look like massive objects in the sky. The way the bids move in a fluid motion would make you believe that it is one giant object instead of hundreds, if not thousands, of small birds.

This majestic occurrence is known as a murmuration and is not led by one single bird. The starlings fly as close as they possibly can next to their fellow birds to keep warm while avoiding collision. These murmurations can twist, spin, and shapeshift in so many different ways. It is almost like looking at a cloud that transforms in the sky. Take a look at the video below to see a starling murmuration in action.

The next time you see a bunch of birds in the sky, keep an eye on them, you never know if you might see a starling murmuration form right before your eyes.
