The Colorado Bureau of Investigation database lists nearly 2,000 cold cases that remained unsolved in the Centennial State. That means thousands of families, friends, and loved ones are still without closure after already experiencing significant loss in their lives.

Cold cases can weigh heavily on the families and communities involved, as they not only deal with the initial trauma of loss but also the ongoing uncertainty and lack of justice. Many of these cases involve violent crimes, such as homicides or disappearances, and it's tragic to think about how many people are still searching for answers.

The Colorado Cold Case Database features unsolved homicides, missing person, and unidentified person cases to assist law enforcement agencies in the development of information, which can lead to the identification, and arrest of any person(s) who may have committed any crime. Dedicated cold case units and technology advancements can also help bring new evidence to light regarding these crimes.

One Colorado case yet to be solved surrounds the disappearance of a seven-month old child from Colorado Springs.

On July 15, 1986, Christopher Enoch Abeyta was abducted from his crib at his home on Ashwood Circle in the middle of the night. The investigation found the home garage door opener was missing and the basement window was open. Foul play is suspected.

The Colorado Springs Police Department has tested three DNA samples from people who believed they might be the missing boy, however they received the results and none were found to match.

Christopher has now been missing for almost 40 years. According to Fox21 Denver, Christopher’s parents, Gil and Bernise Abeyta, have since passed away, so his siblings have taken up the search.

Colorado Springs Police Department leads the investigation involving the disappearance Christopher Abeyta. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to please contact the Colorado Springs Police Department.  If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (719) 634-7867 or 1-(800) 222-8477.
