Summer in Colorado cannot be beat. It is perfect here during the warmer months, except for one pesky thing. If you are anything like me, you have to coat yourself in bug spray when summer hits, because the mosquitoes love you.

Colorado Mosquito Season Could Be Brutal This Year

If you are one of the lucky ones that mosquitoes don't find tasty, you still might want to be prepared this summer, because you could be on the menu.

According to 9News, this could be a terrible year for those buzzing bloodsuckers. Experts from Colorado State University are warning Colorado residents that the upcoming mosquito season could be the worst one in years.

A mild, or as we would rather call it, a nonexistent winter, coupled with early-season warm temperatures, set the stage for increased mosquito activity across the state of Colorado.

CSU Expert Warns More Bug Bites Could Be Coming

Karim Gharbi, horticulture specialist for the Colorado State University Extension office, says that we should expect to see more insect activity in general due to the odd weather and expect more bites from bugs such as mosquitoes.

The first human case of West Nile virus of 2026 has already been documented in Jefferson County on June 2. The virus is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue.

To better prepare yourself and your family against mosquitoes, be sure there is no standing water on your property in places such as garden trays, pots, gutters, birdbaths, and buckets, as these are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  Keeping a can of bug spray close by also helps.
