CSU Students Get Wild Move-In Week Surprise

Move-In Day at a university can be quite an exciting time for all involved. Freshmen could be experiencing living outside of their home for the first time, while seniors could be moving in for the very last time.

Parents could understandably get very emotional seeing their children spread their wings and take a big step into adulthood. You never know what surprises may happen during these yearly move-in days.

Black Bear Spotted on Colorado State University Campus

Students at Colorado State University in Fort Collins got quite the surprise this week as there was an unexpected visitor welcoming students to campus. This visitor is not one you want to see moving boxes and furniture into your dorm.

According to Colorado State University Safety, a black bear was spotted on the main campus on Monday, August 17, then again on August 18, near the Eddy Hall area.

A safety advisory went out at 8:40 a.m. on August 18, telling students and staff to avoid the area. Twenty minutes later, Colorado State University Police were coordinating the safe removal of the black bear at Eddy Hall. By 10:40 a.m., notice went out that the black bear had been safely secured and is in the process of being removed from the CSU campus.

I am sure having a black bear on campus was quite a wild way to kick off the school year, especially for those students who may be from out of state and are not used to seeing this type of wildlife up close and personal.

Colorado Bear Activity Is High This Year

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has mentioned that higher volumes of bear sightings have been reported this season due to ongoing drought conditions and lack of natural food sources, forcing black bears into urban and more populated areas to search for food before hibernation season begins.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the bear was able to be safely removed from CSU's campus.
