Dating is tough. It is not easy to put yourself out there, meet a stranger, go on a date, and hope to find someone to spend the rest of your life with. In 2026, there are many creeps, people with hidden agendas, and perverts out there, and you never know what to expect from someone when going on a date. Walls are up; you question what is true and a lie, and you never know if you can trust the person you just met on an app, online, or that a friend is setting you up with. When it comes to dating in 2026 in Colorado, you can never be too safe, but how many potential daters do a background check, and what do they find?

It is always a good idea to do your homework when meeting a stranger for a date. Make sure they are who they say they are, they work the job they say they do, and live where they say they do. You can never be too careful these days. According to a recent study by datingadvice.com, 40% of those surveyed admit to looking up the criminal and court records of a potential date. While most may think that it is mainly women doing these background checks, that isn't the case. According to the survey, 38% of women do this, and 36% of men do as well, making it pretty even. When it comes to age, 46% of those aged 18 to 24 do a background check, 42% of those aged 25 to 34 do, 30% of those aged 35 to 44 do one, 24% of those aged 45 to 54 do a background check, and only 16% of those 55 and older do one.

Taking the initiative to do a background check is one thing, but what if you find something? According to the survey, 8.5% of those who ran a background check ended up canceling their date because of what they found out. This raises eyebrows to ask if these dates are canceled because of something alarming or because of finding out the person they were talking to was perhaps lying about their true identity. Of dates canceled, 5% happen in the Northwest, 4% in the South, 3% in the Midwest, and 2% in the West. Of those dating around the country, 41% in the Midwest admit to running a background check on a date, 39% in the Northwest, 36% in the South, and 34% in the West.
