18-Year-Old with Rifle Arrested Near Evans Elementary School
An 18-year-old man was arrested on Friday (August 30) after he was found walking with a weapon close to an elementary school in Evans, according a Greeley Tribune report.
The Greeley Police Department initially responded to the 1200 block of 29th Street Road at 3:16 p.m., following reports of a man walking with a rifle, who was also acting highly agitated.
Dispatchers notified nearby Union Colony Elementary School to let them know about the situation taking place, which subsequently prompted the school to go on a lockout for a short time. During the lockout, Greeley police officers searched the area and were able to locate the suspect. In addition, Union Colony tightened up its dismissal process, with Evans police officers on site.
The suspect has now been identified as 18-year-old David Lopez. When officers located Lopez in the 1300 block of 29th Street, he did not have a firearm on him, however they later found the bolt-action .270 hunting rifle in the suspect's backpack. Lopez is currently facing charges for failure to obey and disorderly conduct. He has since been released from the Weld County Jail.
