Taylor Swift Explains the Meaning Behind ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’

If you’re an avid Taylor Swift fan, you are probably already well aware that the country music superstar debuted her brand new single ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together‘ last night (Aug. 13) via a real-time YouTube chat with her legions of loyal fans. Swift has already gone on the record to confirm rumors that first radio offering from her brand new album, ‘Red,’ was indeed written about a former flame — though no names have been named… yet.

“Writing ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ was one of the most hilarious experiences I have ever had in the studio because it just happened so naturally,” Swift tells ‘Nightline’ anchor Cynthia McFadden about the new track (quote via ABC News).

The singer-songwriter penned the tune while in the studio with pop heavyweights Max Martin and Jordan Shellback, and Swift admits the inspiration behind the quirky upbeat track came after a visit to the studio from a friend of one of her exes.

“He starts talking about how he’s heard we were getting back together and that was not the case,” recalls the singer. ”When he leaves, Max and Johan are like, ‘so what’s the story behind that?’ And so I start telling them the story of break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, ugh, the worst.”

“Max says, ‘this is what we’re writing. We’re writing this song,’ and I picked up the guitar and just started singing, ‘we are never–’” Swift continues. “It just happened so fast. It was so much fun.”

If the demand for new music from Swift wasn’t apparent from the buzz surrounding last night’s unique fan experience, the tune’s direct trajectory to the top of iTunes’ paid digital downloads chart just hours after its release solidified any doubt that the superstar is at the top of her game.

‘We’re Never Ever Getting Back Together’ is the first glimpse of Swift’s highly-anticipated fourth studio album, ‘Red,’ due out Oct. 22. Previously referred to as an album full of “sad” songs, the forthcoming project will feature a generous 16 tracks, including previously speculated collaborations with Ed Sheeran and Foster the People’s Mark Foster. ‘Red’ is the follow up to her 2010 ‘Speak Now’ album, which has sold more than four million copies to date.
