Kenny Chesney Explains ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl’ Album Title

We recently reported that Kenny Chesney unveiled the album artwork, title and track listing for his upcoming record, ‘Welcome to the Fishbowl.’ And while the name’s origin did have something to do with the beach, Chesney’s 13th studio album isn’t titled for the ocean or the aquatic life found within it. In fact, the name came as a result of a comment Chesney made about his lifestyle while visiting the Red Bar in Grayton Beach, Fla. with friends.
“We walked in, and it was packed,” Chesney tells USA Today. “There was about 20 minutes of people coming up, saying hello, wanting to get something signed.” While this scenario is Chesney’s everyday reality, the celebrity life seemed to hit his friends for the first time.
“After that died down, one of those guys said, ‘I didn’t realize your life was like this,’” Chesney explains. “I said, ‘Hey, man, welcome to the fishbowl.’ As soon as I said it, I realized that I was going to write a song about how our world and our culture is shrinking.” But it’s not just a song about the annoyances of being a recognizable face. It’s quite the opposite, actually, as Chesney even calls out celebrities who would complain about it.
“In fact, at the end of the song I speak to celebrities and say, ‘You asked for this,’” he says. “But you don’t have to be in the public eye for your business to be everybody’s business. And that’s just the way it is.”
Chesney’s new album hits stores June 19. The ‘You and Tequila’ singer performed with his Brothers of the Sun Tour companion Tim McGraw at the ACM Awards last weekend, and now the guys are preparing for the next leg of their tour, which commences June 2 in Tampa, Fla.
