Today is National Diabetes Association Alert Day. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself, make a doctor appointment and make sure you are not on the path to diabetes and to do something about it if you are. Diabetes is a silent killer that effects so many people but can be controlled if you educate yourself and learn how to live with it. The worst thing you can do is to let it go undetected or untreated.

I live this life every day. I wake up just after 2 am. I drive to work with my little lunch bag filled with my meds and my allotment of food for the morning. I sit at my chair and pull out my blood sugar monitor. I prick my finger and check my blood sugar. I then inject myself with a shot of long lasting insulin for the day and then pull out my insulin pen and shoot up another dose of the fast acting insulin according to what my blood sugar reading is. I will do this 3 or 4 times a day. I then take my seven morning pills to regulate my blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol, and brain waves. It takes a pharmacy to get me through each day but I have figured out how to live with it and do live a very nice life. I hate diabetes and despise being tethered to it but I have no choice. It is how I have to live. Filling up my pill box each week is one of the most deflating things that I have to do but it keeps me alive and I really like being alive.

There are so many people who walk around with diabetes and don't even know it. There are many signs like frequent urination, fatigue and many more. You need to get yourself checked out so you can start treating it if you have it. You owe it to you and your loved ones to make sure you are diagnosed. It is nothing to mess around with. It can slowly take away your ability live your life but you can live with it if you learn how. There is information and even a test you can take to see if you are at risk on the American Diabetes Association website. Don't let another day go by without getting yourself checked out. We have a lot of smiles to share together so let's make sure we take care of ourselves and enjoy our time together. If I can do it, so can you.
