There are certain things in this world you don’t do. You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. You don’t spit into the wind. You don’t pull the mask off the Lone Ranger and you don’t mess with our national anthem. It happened again last night.

The NCAA national championship game in men’s basketball was last night. Kentucky won the game but the anthem is what has me talking. Colorado based band The Fray performed the anthem before the game and committed the cardinal sin of messing with it. The national anthem is a great song just the way it was written. It has been sung to inspire and unite before sporting events and public gatherings because we all know it, sing along and are filled with pride to be Americans. Nothing ticks me off more than when someone feels they need to rewrite the melody and try to make it a pop song or hit record. I feel if you mess with it you should be immediately put on a train and moved to Canada. You should be honored to get to sing it and to change it is blasphemous to me.

When you watch the video, look at the players and crowd as they try to find a way to sing along. The anthem should unite a choir of American voices but when you change the tune to something unrecognizable, how are we to sing along? A major thumbs down to The Fray.

If you get the honor of singing our national anthem at an event, put your hand on your heart and sing the song the way it was written. It is America’s song and us Americans don’t like you messing with it. Am I out of line or do you agree with me?
