Great Shot: Guinness Record Set in Loveland For Longest Backward Cornhole Toss
UPDATE:
Luke has been notified that his cornhole toss has officially been logged as a Guinness record. Congratulations, Sir.
###
Barring any complications, Loveland will be marked in the Guinness Book of World Records for this cornhole toss made by the Champion of Tailgating.
It's not often you get to witness a Guinness Book of World Records attempt being made, especially in your hometown. Loveland's fifth record was all about shooting some cornhole, backwards.
Loveland, Colorado, has already made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for four feats:
- In 2005, Suzy Bralliar set the record for World's Largest Number of Unicorn Related Items. Suzy had 2,719. This record stands, today.
- In 2009, the Loveland Roadrunners organized the World's Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Vampires (354.)
- In 2011, by competing in the NPC Ambrust Pro Gym Warrior Classic Bodybuilding Championships in Loveland, E. Wilma Conner became the World's Oldest Bodybuilder (Female.) This record stands, today.
- In 2019, by having 41,769 of them, Sharon Lipinski and Christine Forster set the record for World's Longest Line of Toothbrushes. This record stands, today.

For over 10 years, Luke Lorick, who now lives in Loveland, has been championing tailgating and homegating with Tailgating Challenge. He created National Tailgating Day, National Homegating Day, and the new National Yard Games Day which will always be on the first day of summer.
Luke decided he would attempt to set the record for World's Largest Backward Cornhole Toss early in 2022. The record would be attempted at The Foundry lawn in Downtown Loveland, on June 18, 2022. I made a point of being there to see it happen.
The attempt was scheduled for 10 a.m. that morning, so I went over at about 9:45. I met with Luke for a minute as he discussed that they were waiting for the surveyor to make sure everything was measured officially. The attempt would be 36 feet. When you actually play cornhole the boards are 27 feet apart.
A small crowd of fans had gathered at The Foundry to see the attempt, including Loveland Mayor Jaaki Marsh. I grabbed a coffee at Colorado Coffee Company and waited for the event to begin.
At about 10 minutes after 10 a.m. on that overcast morning, things were officially ready to begin. Several cameras were in place taking pictures and video for documenting the attempt. I brought out my android phone's camera and picked a spot just north of where the target board had been placed, and waited.
Luke had told me that while practicing, sometimes it would take him 5 minutes to land a bag in the hole, while shooting backward, other times it could take up to 45 minutes. I told him that I had a previous engagement, and could only stay for an hour.
Bag after bag went over the Tailgating Champion's shoulder; many missed the board completely, some came very close. I looked over to the clock at The Foundry: 10 minutes had passed, still no record. People began cheering Luke on, after each round of eight bags failed to hit the hole.
Then, boom! My unofficial count had bag #74 setting the record that Saturday morning in Loveland. It was a blue bag, and the time was 10:26.
The length was officially - 36 feet , 7 inches.
Take a look at my photos from the day:

It will be a few months (for getting al the documentation signed off on) before the record becomes official.
