Every day, we see the foreboding statistics flashing on the news: the number of infected and the number of deaths due to COVID-19. However, more and more people recover from the coronavirus every day in Colorado, and each day a new survivor is released from the hospital.

This was the case for Sergio Rodriguez, 58 years old, who was able to leave UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies on April 18, 2020, after 16 days of fighting COVID-19.

The UCHealth staff celebrated his release by gathering in the atrium with his wife, children, and grandchildren, who had balloons and touching signs thanking the doctors and nurses who helped Rodriguez get through this ordeal. Check out the photos below, provided by UCHealth:

According to a press release from UCHealth, while Rodriguez was recovering, "he moved to a different unit where he could look out of the window from his room and see his son praying, singing and playing music from the parking lot."

Rodriguez worked at the JBS meatpacking plant in Greeley before it was shut down due to COVID-19 exposure. Shortly after he was released, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds flew over the hospital and over Rodriguez and his family, signaling a new beginning.
